Upgraded BSL17-C2/BSL17C-C2 Emergency LED Drivers
The BSL17-C2 and BSL17C-C2 Emergency LED Drivers have been upgraded in 2014 to offer universal input operation, which makes the drivers more robust and helps reduce the possibility of installation errors.
The BSL17-C2 and its conduit counterpart, BSL17C-C2, are Class 2 units with a flexible output voltage range of 15-50 VDC.They can be used with an LED output lighting load up to 7W for 90 minutes in emergency mode and are UL Component Recognized for factory installation only.
The BSL17-C2 and BSL17C-C2 are UL Classified for use with specific Fortimo downlight and spotlight modules. This designation means that the emergency drivers can be installed in the factory without the need for further UL testing in Fortimo fixtures for which an emergency option has been filed with UL.
What does it mean to be a Class 2 unit like the BSL17-C2 and BSL17C-C2? Because output power is restricted with Class 2, Class 2 circuits have reduced requirements regarding wire size, insulation, installation materials, derating factors and overcurrent protection wiring methods. Class 1 units, which are not output power restricted, require protections to avoid potentially hazardous conditions.
The voltage and current limits that apply to the BSL17C-C2 are contained in Table 11(B) Class 2 and Class 3 Direct- Current Power Source Limitations in Chapter 9 of the NEC®. The voltage output of the BSL17C-C2 is between 15VDC and 50VDC, and the unit is inherently limited. Therefore, no overcurrent protection required. The maximum output current, Imax, is calculated by dividing 150A by the maximum voltage, 50VDC, to get 3A. The maximum current output of the BSL17C-C2 is 270mA, well within the maximum allowed.
|The BSL17 and BSL17C have also been upgraded to universal input status. They, however, are not Class 2 units and are not designed for use with Fortimo or the Cree modules. The BSL17 (non-conduit) and BSL17C (conduit) are UL Recognized for the U.S. and Canada and must be installed at the factory. Their output voltage is 45- 130 VDC. The pre-upgrade VDC was 30 to 80. The units work in conjunction with an AC LED driver (output current of 1.5 A maximum) and provide 90 minutes of emergency illumination.|

* The NEC defines Class 2 circuits in Article 725 as, "The portion of
the wiring system between the load side of a Class 2 po wer source and the connected equipment. Due to its power limitations, a Class 2 circuit considers safety from a fire initiation standpoint and provides acceptable protection from electric shock."
